The Egyptian Migration Hub (EHUB)

After the launch hosted in June 2022, and to engage with key stakeholders, CMRS hosted four Technical Forum Sectoral Meetings between, the topics covered in the meetings were

• Migration Data: From Data to Implementation.

• Protection of Smuggled Migrants and Victims of Trafficking.

• Enhancing Skills Matching of Egyptian Migrant Workers in the External Labor Market.

• Enhancing the Socio-economic Conditions of Migrants and Refugees in Egypt: Policies, Partnerships and Practices. 

As a concluding event to the first phase of the EHUB, a general forum meeting was hosted on February 8, 2023, where the key discussions and recommendations from the four sectoral meetings were presented. 

Moreover, and given the significant role that the media plays in shaping the discourse about migrants and refugees and informing the public about migration-related issues, two media related activities were conducted during phase 1. The first was a five-day training directed to media personnel working for Egyptian newspapers. It was designed and conducted by experts in the field of migration. The second activity was the production of a series of three podcasts that aimed to inform the wider audience not specialized in the field. The podcast hosted experts who spoke about different migration related issues.

In its second phase that is expected to last until September 2026, EHUB will sustain and expand the activities that were conducted during the first phase. The EHUB will continue as a coordination mechanism, bringing actors together on a periodic basis in Egypt and the region. This second phase falls under the framework of the project "Strengthening Migration Data and Statistics Ecosystem in Egypt."

Research as a new component will be added to the EHUB to ensure that the policy dialogues take into consideration high-quality research findings. Research planned for the second phase will be driven by key areas discussed in the launch, Forum Sectoral Meetings, and High-level meeting that were held during the first phase. The research themes are built on recommendations of further knowledge production to bridge the existing gaps in knowledge about the key topics discussed in phase 1. Moreover, EHUB will continue to steer policy dialogues on thematic areas of national priority by hosting relevant discussions. 

The capacity building component will still exist but in this phase the activities will be directed to young practitioners working in the field of migration in Egypt.
