Mixed Migration Network of Scholars
Funded by the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and implemented in collaboration with the Mixed Migration Hub (MHub) hosted by the IOM, under the framework of the Africa Regional Migration Program (ARMP). The project aims to enhance the production and dissemination of knowledge in the area of mixed migration information for policy formulation.
CMRS was entrusted to bring together scholars from the region of the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) to develop the first academic network among mixed migration scholars from the region. During fall 2021, CMRS brought together seven scholars working on mixed migration issues from six countries in the MENA region (Algeria, Egypt, Libya, Tunisia, Morocco, and Sudan).
In February 2023, the Center for Migration and Refugee Studies (CMRS) and the International Organization for Migration formally extended their collaboration and started a new phase of the Academic Network on Mixed Migration in the Middle East and North Africa. The overall aim of the third phase of the network is to sustain the network and expand its scope.
For this phase, the geographical scope of the network is extended beyond North Africa to include scholars and researchers from the Middle East. During this phase, ten scholars representing Egypt, Yemen, Libya, Palestine, Lebanon, and Morocco joined the network.
From July 9 to July 11, 2023; CMRS organized a three-day training for 22 young researchers, post-graduate students, and persons working in the field of international migration from Egypt, Lebanon, Oman, Iraq, Yemen, and Syria.
The training was delivered by the network members and consisted of the following modules:
- International migration in the Middle East and North Africa
- Migration statistics
- Legal frameworks governing mixed migration in the Middle East and North Africa
- Youth and mixed migration
- Researching mixed migration
Moreover, four policy briefs are being produced by the new network members.
The policy briefs cover the following topics:
- Mixed Migration in Yemen
- Youth and Mixed Migration in Lebanon
- The Legal Aspects of Mixed Migration in the Arab Region
- Mixed Migration in Libya
On July 12, 2023; a public workshop was held at the American University in Cairo, to disseminate the findings of the policy briefs. The workshop involved key stakeholders concerned with mixed migration.
