Sudan: The Forgotten Conflict
A number of activities took place at the Middle East Studies Program (MESP) in November to shed light on the disastrous conflict Sudan that has resulted in what the United Nations is calling “the world’s largest humanitarian crisis”.
Overshadowed for a long time by the genocide in Gaza and the war in Ukraine, the 31 months old war in Sudan has led to tens of thousands of casualties and displaced millions of people.
On November 20, 2025 MESP hosted the talk “Sudan: From Revolution to Civil War” with Sudanese scholar Maha Zeinelabdin Abdelwahab, moderated by Ibrahim Elnur, Associate Professor in the Political Science Department.
And on November 24 MESP MA student Daria Konstantinova organized a student debate titled “Sudan’s War: A Local Tragedy or a Regional Chess Game?” moderated by Professor Alaa Elhadidi, Professor of Practice at PPAD.
MESP has also asked a number of Sudan experts to share their recommendations for readings and resources that shed light on the context of the conflict.
In February 2026, MESP in collaboration with AUC’s Journalism and Mass Communication Department will host a photo exhibition by Sudanese photographer Sari Omer showcasing his work during visits to Darfur between 2018 and 2020 to study the impact of war.
