About the Program
Rethinking the Economy
The program challenges dominant views of the economy and its role in society. Instead of treating economic systems as separate from politics, we examine how they are shaped by institutions, power and social processes. Our research explores alternatives to the prevailing neoliberal model and emphasizes approaches that are equitable and sustainable.
A Different Lens: The Accumulation Model
A central concept in our work is the accumulation model. Economic value is not just the result of market transactions but emerges through social interactions across communities, institutions and markets. This approach highlights the political, social and institutional forces that influence how goods, knowledge and capital are produced, exchanged and distributed.
Power, Governance and Economic Life
Our research traces how governance structures and power dynamics shape economic life at local, national, regional and global levels. We study the interactions that drive the production and circulation of value and aim to move beyond simple divisions between actors and structures.
From Research to Public Debate
The program produces research that informs debates in academia, policy and the public sphere. By collaborating with scholars, practitioners and public intellectuals across MENA and the Global South, we aim to promote economic models that are fairer, more inclusive and sustainable.
Building Collective Dialogue
Advancing alternative approaches to political economy requires collaboration. The program brings together academics, experts, activists and public thinkers in a shared search for solutions. This ongoing dialogue happens across civil society in MENA and in conversation with partners throughout the Global South, creating collective understanding and insight into regional and global challenges.
