Samer Soliman Award

The Samer Soliman Book Award recognizes outstanding scholarly work that critically examines the realities, transformations, and impacts of neoliberalism in the Middle East and North Africa.

The award supports original research that engages with the economic, political, social, and cultural dimensions of neoliberalism, contributing to deeper understanding and alternative perspectives on developments in the region. Open to academic books in English, Arabic, or French, including single- and co-authored works.

Eligibility

  • Academic books (already published)

  • Books in English, Arabic and French.

  • Single or co-authored books (excluding anthologies, edited volumes, textbooks, handbooks, and translated books).

Selection Criteria

The winning book will make an original contribution toward understanding the past, present, and future of neoliberalism in MENA. Submissions may cover a wide range of topics, including but not limited to: Political Economy and Governance, Environmental History and Politics, Urban Politics and Development, Refugee and Migration Studies, Labor Studies, Public Health and Healthcare, Culture, Gender, Education, Technology, Theories and Philosophies of Neoliberalism.

We encourage submissions from any academic discipline that provide both theoretical insights and concrete analyses of neoliberalism’s impact on MENA, contributing fresh perspectives and exploring alternative futures for the region.

$3000 Award

The Award is announced during the annual pathways conference taking place between September and November of each year.

Farah Ramzy Award Winner

Farah Ramzy 

Assistant professor in the Department of Arabic Studies. University of Strasbourg. Ph.D. in Political Science from Paris-Nanterre University and Lausanne University.

Farah Won the award for her book “ Egyptian Students and Politics Beyon Protest” , which examines how the evolution of higher education in Egypt affects students and student politics. It aims to look beyond the historical representations of the student movement as protests for national and regional causes in order to account for the impact of the socio-economic shift in the 1990s, the revolution in 2011, and the restrictive context post-2013.

Senior Lecturer in Comparative Politics of the Middle East at SOAS, University of London

Award-winning book, Politics in the Crevices: Urban Design and the Making of Property Markets in Cairo and Istanbul (2024). The book explores neoliberal urban transformation in two of the largest and oldest cities in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA). Through a multi-sited ethnography in 6 neighborhoods, the book weaves together a rich narrative of urban struggle, change, and resistance. The discussion explored the book’s origins, research process, the state of Middle East Urbanism, Dr. El-Kazaz’s future projects, and more.
