Pathways Beyond Neoliberalism : Voices From MENA October 28, 2025

On Monday, October 28, 2024, Pathways at Oriental Hall, AUC Tahrir Square held a book launch for the Arabic translation of The Hidden Wealth of Nations by renowned economist Gabriel Zucman.

The event featured a keynote intervention by Zucman, professor at the University of California, Berkeley, who joined virtually to discuss the core arguments of his book. Zucman examined the scale and mechanisms of offshore wealth, tax havens and global tax evasion. He presented his methodological approach to estimating hidden financial assets and reflected on the implications for inequality, public finance and global economic governance.

The discussion also addressed:

  • Offshore wealth and international investment anomalies
  • Tax evasion versus tax avoidance
  • Automatic exchange of bank information and its limits
  • The role of tax havens in global inequality
  • Prospects for international cooperation, financial transparency and a global asset registry

The launch included commentary and discussion with scholars and participants, as well as simultaneous Arabic interpretation, marking an important step in making critical political economy scholarship accessible to Arabic-speaking audiences. Ingy Hegazy moderated the talk, with Ahmed Feteha as discussant and Magdy Abdelhady as book translator.
