CMRS Launches the Second Phase of EHUB Project

December 16, 2024

The Center for Migration and Refugee Studies (CMRS) launched the second phase of the Egyptian Migration Hub (EHUB) project funded by the European Union in Egypt and supported by the International Organization for Migration (IOM). The second phase of the project falls under the framework of the project "Strengthening Migration Data and Statistics Ecosystem in Egypt."

Attended by over 46 migration stakeholders and covered widely by the Egyptian media, the event marked the start of EHUB's second phase, which builds on the first one through further engaging in national policy dialogues complemented by research on migrants from and in Egypt under two main clusters:

  • External employment of Egyptian labor
  • Socioeconomic inclusion of migrants and refugees in Egypt

Additionally, the project will offer three EHUB fellowships on migration and refugee studies at The American University in Cairo to Egyptians engaged in migration issues.

The event featured keynote speeches by the partners’ and Egyptian government’s representatives announcing the launch of the project’s second phase and setting the scene for the upcoming activities. The speakers were:

  • Ibrahim Awad, professor of practice of global affairs and director of the Center for Migration and Refugee Studies (CMRS), The American University in Cairo
  • Wael Badawi, deputy assistant foreign minister for migration, refugee affairs and combating human trafficking, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Emigration and Egyptian Expatriates
  • Anne Kofoed, team leader for social cohesion and governance in the cooperation section of the EU Delegation
  • Carlos Oliver Cruz, chief of mission of the International Organization for Migration (IOM) in Egypt

In addition to the keynote speeches, the event hosted a panel discussion in which experts in the field discussed the demand for Egyptian labor in external markets.

The first phase of EHUB was launched by CMRS in cooperation with the EU in June 2022 with the objective of bringing together academics, practitioners and government officials to discuss important topics of migration in Egypt. During its first phase, the project hosted national dialogues and a general high-level forum covering topics of relevance to migrants from and in Egypt.
