CMRS Event Examines Impact of Refugee Aid Reductions in Egypt

October 25, 2026

Given the shrinking aid and the severity of its impact on refugees and asylum-seekers, international cooperation and responsibility-sharing are more important than ever to guarantee refugee protection. In light of the recent aid cuts, the Center for Migration and Refugee Studies (CMRS) conducted a study examining the impact of funding cuts on programs serving refugees and asylum-seekers in Egypt.

The research team presented the study’s findings at an event titled “Navigating Aid Reductions in Egypt: Refugee Programming and Responsibility-Sharing in International Cooperation,” held October 25, 2026, at The American University in Cairo (AUC). Following the presentation, CMRS hosted a high-level panel to reflect on the study and discuss the policy and programmatic implications of aid reductions. The panel was moderated by professor of global affairs and director of CMRS at AUC Ibrahim Awad and included:

  1. Ambassador Neveen El Husseiny, assistant minister for migration, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation, and Egyptian Expatriates
  2. Hanan Hamdan, UNHCR representative to Egypt and to the League of Arab States
  3. Counsellor Amal El Atifi, head of cooperation, Embassy of Canada to Egypt
  4. Matteo Caprotti, country director, Save the Children Egypt
  5. Ahmed Badawy, chairperson, Egyptian Foundation for Refugee Rights (EFRR) and member of the National Council for Human Rights (NCHR)

We extend our sincere thanks to the panelists and all participants for their valuable contributions.
