Mixed Migration Network of Scholars

Funded by the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and implemented in collaboration with the Mixed Migration Hub (MHub) hosted by the IOM, under the framework of the Africa Regional Migration Program (ARMP). The project aims to enhance the production and dissemination of knowledge in the area of mixed migration information for policy formulation.

CMRS was entrusted to bring together scholars from the region of the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) to develop the first academic network among mixed migration scholars from the region. During fall 2021, CMRS brought together seven scholars working on mixed migration issues from six countries in the MENA region (Algeria, Egypt, Libya, Tunisia, Morocco, and Sudan).

  • Conceptualization of mixed migration, its manifestations and legal impact on North Africa
  • Impact of COVID-19 pandemic on migrants in North African countries
  • EU Border Externalization Policies in North Africa and Beyond: Impacts on the Region
  • The Role of Academia in knowledge production on Mixed Migration: Challenges and Opportunities
  • Mixed Migration Data Collection and Dissemination in North Africa

The findings of these policy briefs were presented in a public webinar involving key stakeholders concerned with mixed migration in the region in September 2021.

The training was delivered by the academic network's members from Egypt, Sudan, Morocco, and Tunisia, and consisted of the following modules:

  • International migration in North Africa
  • Researching mixed migration: theories, gaps, and future directions
  • Governance of mixed migration in North Africa
  • Women and children in mixed migration
  • Mixed migration and development
  • Non-citizens in the international migration surveys in North Africa

Additionally, five new policy briefs are being produced by both new and old members of the network.

The policy briefs cover the following topics:

  • Governance of Mixed Migration in North Africa.
  • Profile of mixed migration flows in North Africa and policies on their admission and protection.
  • A comparative study on migration surveys methodologies in North Africa: reflections on the MED-HIMS Surveys.
  • Climate change and its impact on migration: the case of Egypt
  • Climate change and migration in North Africa
