Accreditation and Bar Exam

AUC holds institutional accreditation from the Commission on Higher Education of the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools in the United States (MSCHE/Middle States). Moreover, in the United States of America, AUC is licensed to grant degrees and is incorporated in the State of Delaware.

Students who hold a law degree from an Egyptian university and obtain an LLM or MA can apply for equivalency to a master's degree in law provided by Egyptian universities.

The law department has supported students applying for SJD or JSD degrees in the United States, including prestigious universities. Some U.S. universities accept candidates with LLM degrees completed outside the United States on a case-by-case basis. Other U.S. universities’ regulations do no permit students with LLM degrees completed outside their program or outside the United States to pursue their PhD studies unless they have completed their LLM degree in the United States. Students who are interested in pursuing their studies in the United States must research the subject.

The New York State Board of Law Examiners states that eligibility for the bar examination requires study in the United States. An LLM degree program outside of the U.S., whether or not it is affiliated with a U.S. law school, does not by itself confer eligibility. Foreign law graduates may become eligible for the New York bar examination by completing a program of study in the United States consisting of a minimum of 20 semester hours of credit, or the equivalent, in professional law subjects, which includes basic courses in American law, in an approved law school in the United States.

Program Requirements and Admission

Depends on how many courses you take, i.e. you can take a minimum of one course and a maximum of four per semester. However, it is generally expected that students complete  their degrees in two years. LLM students, as they are expected to complete eight courses plus their thesis, can finish the whole program in one year if a full load of four courses is taken each semester.

For LLM: Students are expected to successfully finish 27 credit hours of courses plus their thesis - four courses (12 credits) of core requirements and five courses (15 credits) of electives. Students will be able to take up to five courses as electives, three of which have to be law courses. The law department's approval is required for electives offered by other departments.
For IHRL: Students are expected to successfully finish 27 credit hours of courses plus their thesis; five courses (15 credits) of core requirements and 4 courses (12 credits) of electives. The remaining four courses are electives, two of which have to be IHRL courses. Department approval is required for electives offered by other departments.

If you do not have a law degree you can only apply to the IHRL program.  You can not apply to the LLM as the law degree is a prerequisite.

An applicant not seeking an AUC degree but who wishes to take AUC courses for academic credit may be admitted as a non-degree student if he/she meets the minimum criteria for graduate admission. A number of places are set aside each year for such students, most of whom take a year away from their studies at another institution for study and living experience in Egypt. Since AUC is a U.S.-accredited institution following an American system, students from U.S. universities are usually able to transfer their AUC credits to their home institutions, but they are advised to check in advance with their university.  Non-degree applicants follow the same procedures for admission as degree-seeking students and should enclose transcripts of their undergraduate work.

Upon request, the University may approve a change of status from non-degree to degree student. If a graduate non-degree student should become a degree candidate, the department of major will consider accepting credit for courses taken under non-degree status. All academic regulations applicable to degree students will apply retroactively with such change of status.

Those who wish to attend individual classes may apply as auditors; however, they may not sit for final examinations, nor receive academic credit or any University certificate of enrollment. Auditors do not have to meet all requirements for regular admission but must apply to the Office of Graduate Admissions by the deadlines indicated by the University. Since permission to audit is on a space-available basis, applicants are not permitted to register until after the registration of regular students has been completed. Auditors pay one financial credit hour for the course.
