Methods of Research with Migrants and Refugees

About the Course

This short course addresses the main challenges and dilemmas that researchers confront when collecting and interpreting data on migrants and refugees. The participants will read and discuss how research on migration is conducted by examining the relevant methodologies and practices. The course seeks to provide an orientation to the main methodological questions that need to be answered when conducting primary and original research covering quantitative and qualitative methodologies. Questions to be covered by the course will include accessibility and reliability of relevant data (ranging from the use of statistics, as well as access to social fields), handling confidential research material, analyzing data, ethical issues and validity and reliability issues.

About the Instructor

Ayman Zohry is an expert on population and migration studies based in Cairo, Egypt. He is the founding president of The Egyptian Society for Migration Studies (EGYMIG). Zohry was the first chair of the Scientific Panel on Migration, Union for African Population Studies (UAPS) and the former chair of the first Scientific Panel on International Migration, the International Union for the Scientific Study of Population (IUSSP) 2011 - 2014. His current research interests include internal migration and urbanization, labor migration, irregular migration, migration governance, migration and culture and migration policies in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region and Europe. Zohry served as a member of the editorial board of the Journal of Immigrant and Refugee Studies 2005 - 2013. Currently, he serves as a member of the editorial board of the International Migration Review (IMR).
