GAPP Students Participate in 35th Christoph Heyns Competition in Côte d’Ivoire
AUC International Human Rights Law students participated in the 35th edition of the Christoph Heyns Competition in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire.
The competition simulates proceedings before the African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights, with students taking on the role of lawyers and faculty members serving as judges. Participants prepare written arguments addressing a human rights case before presenting their arguments before a panel of three faculty judges.
This year, 43 universities participated in the English-language stream, with teams representing countries including South Africa, Nigeria, Kenya, Uganda, and Egypt. AUC and the British University in Egypt represented Egypt in the English stream. GAPP’s two students performed strongly in the written component, ranking among the top 10 for their written answers.
Beyond the competition, the students had the opportunity to connect with participants from different countries and cultures and explore Côte d’Ivoire, including a visit to Grand-Bassam, the old colonial capital of Côte d’Ivoire.
The next edition of the Christoph Heyns Competition will take place in Nairobi, Kenya, next year.
