Emerging Social Justice: Narratives in the Global South Workshop
In June 2025, the Shehr Comparative Urban Landscapes Network co-founders, Martina Rieker and Kamran Asdar Ali, organized a closed workshop titled "Emerging Social Justice: Narratives in the Global South Workshop." The three-day event was held in collaboration with Pathways Beyond Neoliberalism.
The workshop brought together approximately 20 emerging and established scholars to discuss imaginations of social justice across the Middle East and South Asia. Participants presented research on a variety of topics under the broader theme of social justice, tackling informal labor, unequal access to housing, emancipatory struggles, and everyday negotiations under structural inequalities. The research covered India, Pakistan, Balochistan, Jordan, Tunisia, the broader MENA region, and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Ingy Higazy, research manager at Pathways, participated in the workshop with a presentation titled "Inhabitable Circulation: Infrastructure and the (Im)mobile Commons in Cairo.
