Master of Arts in Middle East Studies
Program Overview
Consistent with the mission of the School of Global Affairs and Public Policy, Middle East Studies is an interdisciplinary academic program designed to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of the peoples, societies and economies of the region. The graduate program offers courses in Arabic language and literature, anthropology, economics, gender and women’s studies, history, law, political science and sociology with the purpose of introducing students to a variety of methodologies for studying the Middle East.
The graduate program focuses on the period from the 18th century onwards and addresses issues of religion, ecology, history, economy, society, polity, gender, and culture. Given the geographical location of Cairo, the program as a whole concentrates on the Arab region. The program is intended for students who wish to pursue a variety of careers such as academia, diplomacy, other government services, work with NGOs, development, business, finance, journalism, public relations and cultural affairs.
The course provides training in Arabic, research methods and a broad range of topics relevant to the study of the Middle East. The course includes extracurricular activities and an option to study abroad.
The MA in Middle East studies is a two-year (maximum four-year) course intended for students from all social science and humanities backgrounds
Career Opportunities
Graduates of the program hold positions in NGOs, governmental and private sector entities.
Fellowship
The American University in Cairo has two categories of fellowships: institutional and sponsored. Institutional fellowships are funded by the University while sponsored fellowships are from private endowments and donors.
Fellowships are highly competitive awards. They are open to new students and may also be available to continuing graduate students who display superior performance in their academic endeavors, depending on the availability of allocated funds for a given fellowship award.
